Why Isn't My Website Bringing In Any Customers?

TL;DR

There are two separate failures here, and they need opposite fixes. If nobody arrives, your website is not getting traffic: search engines cannot read it, or it does not answer what people actually search. If visitors arrive and leave, your website is not converting: the page never says who it is for or what to do next. Look in Search Console before you pay anyone to repair anything.

Because there are two different failures, and most owners fix the wrong one. Either your website is not getting traffic, or your website is not converting the traffic it gets, and the repair is the opposite in each case.

The complaint comes in two versions. Some people say the site gets no visitors; others say it gets no customers. They sound alike and are nothing alike, and if the diagnosis is wrong you pay for a repair that changes nothing.

No one arrives. The site is live, but it does not come up in search, nothing links to it, and nobody is sent to it. The problem is being found.

People arrive and leave. There are visitors, sometimes plenty, and the phone stays quiet. The problem is being convincing.

Most articles on this give you nine causes taken from both lists, and you are left unsure which applies to you. So let us separate them.

Traffic or conversion: a five minute check

Open Google Search Console, go to the performance report and set it to the last three months.

Fewer than a few dozen impressions a month means Google hardly knows you exist. That is a visibility problem, not a page problem; read the next section.

Impressions and clicks but no enquiries means people reach you and leave. That is a page problem; go straight to the second half.

Plenty of impressions and hardly any clicks is a third version: you appear in results, but your titles and descriptions persuade nobody to click. That is fixed in the titles, not in the site.

Without this check, every repair is guesswork, and the guess is usually wrong, because rewriting a page feels easier than accepting that nobody is searching for you.

If your website is not getting traffic

The first question is not about content. It is whether the site can be read at all. We tested this on our own pages. Googlebot does run JavaScript, but in a second pass, later and with no guarantee, and the crawlers behind AI assistants do not run it at all. If your text only appears once a script has loaded, it does not exist for them, and for Google it exists later and less well. It is the most common reason a site that looks normal from the inside is invisible from the outside.

Second: are your pages written around what people search, or around how you describe yourself? Nobody types “integrated communication solutions”. People search in plain words, such as “accountant in Leeds” or “kitchen fitter near me”, and you can check exactly which words in Search Console rather than guessing.

Third: is there anything to find you by apart from your own name? If the only searches you appear for include your business name, that is not traffic; those are people who already knew you. The technical side of this is in why your site is not showing up on Google.

If your website is not converting

This part is uncomfortable, particularly if the site cost a fair amount.

A site can look excellent and achieve nothing. That happens when it was designed as a brochure: pleasant to look at, built to impress rather than to move anyone forward. It never says plainly who it is for, which problem it solves, and what happens once you are persuaded.

The symptoms of a site with no enquiries are nearly always the same. The opening section talks about passion and excellence but never says what you sell. There is no price, no range and no hint of budget, so visitors assume it is expensive and go elsewhere; for B2B services in the UK, a starting price shown before VAT is often enough. The only button says “Contact us”, which asks for effort and promises nothing back. And there is no proof anywhere: no client, no result, no figure, not even a link to your Google reviews.

The encouraging news is that this is quick to fix. Conversion improves in days rather than months, because it depends on what the page says, and it works on the visitors you already have rather than waiting for new ones. The longer version of the argument is in the difference between a website that looks good and one that actually works.

A case where nobody was arriving

Pucca Diana, a makeup artist in Bacău, Romania, had sixteen years of work behind her and no presence in search at all, because everything lived in an Instagram feed. It was not a conversion problem but the one that comes before it: nobody was getting to the site.

We built the identity, the website and the feed as one system, with search designed in from the start rather than added at the end. What changed is written up in the project.

The order that saves money

Fix conversion first, then traffic. Send visitors to a page that does not persuade and you pay twice: once for the visitors, and again later when the page has to be redone.

And check before you buy anything. If someone sells you SEO without first looking at your Search Console, they are selling you a package, not a diagnosis.

How we approach it

We design and build websites for brands that have outgrown the brochure stage, with structure and SEO planned from the first frame rather than bolted on at the end. If we look at yours and the problem is not the site, we will tell you so, even when that means there is nothing for us to quote.

FAQ

Is my UK site failing on traffic or on conversion? Check Search Console for Google UK impressions first: low impressions is a traffic problem, many visits with no enquiries is a conversion one.

Why doesn’t my website bring in customers even though it looks good? Because looking good and selling are different jobs. An attractive site that fails to say, within seconds, who it is for, what it solves and what happens next loses the visitor just as an ugly one does. Looks make someone pause; the words persuade them.

How do I tell whether the problem is traffic or conversion? Open Search Console. Fewer than a few dozen impressions a month means nobody is finding you, which is a visibility problem. Impressions and clicks without enquiries means people come and go, which is a problem with the page.

Why is my website getting visits but no enquiries? Usually because the first screen does not say what you sell, there is no indication of price, the only button says “Contact us”, and there is no proof anywhere. Each of those can be fixed on the page itself, without waiting for more traffic.

How long before a website starts bringing in customers? The conversion side can improve within days, because it depends on what the page says. Search traffic takes two to six months. That is why conversion is worth fixing first: it works on the visitors you already have.

Do I still need a website if my clients come from referrals? Yes, and for referrals most of all. Someone who has been recommended to you looks you up before ringing, and what they find decides whether they ring. The site does not replace the referral; it either confirms it or loses it.
