How Do You Get ChatGPT to Recommend Your Brand?

TL;DR

ChatGPT has no ranking you climb. It recommends you when it finds clear information about you, repeated consistently on your site and confirmed off it. You cannot pay for it and it does not follow your Google position. You check it by asking the assistant directly, monthly, with the same questions.

ChatGPT recommends you when it finds clear information about what you do, repeated the same way on your own site and confirmed somewhere else. There is no ranking to climb and no placement to buy.

The question arrives in several shapes. Some ask how to get recommended by ChatGPT, some how to get ChatGPT to recommend their site, some simply how to be visible online now. It is the same problem.

One thing worth saying before anything else: in a keyword tool, this question looks like it does not exist. We measured it in Romanian, the other language we publish in. Keyword Planner reports nothing for how do I show up in chatgpt. It also reports nothing for how does seo work, which is obviously a question people ask, so the floor belongs to the tool, not to the market. Searching Google in the same language returns six local results written on exactly that topic. People ask. The tools just do not show it.

Where AI assistants get their information

From three places, not one. From what your site says, from what other sites say about you, and from what the model picked up in training.

You control the first. You influence the second. The third is already written and does not get rewritten on request.

The difference from Google is that there is no ranking here to move up by one position. The assistant composes an answer, and you are either in it or you are not. That is why “position one” and “recommended” are two different things.

Why ChatGPT misses you even though you rank well

Because a good Google position comes from relevance and authority on a page, while an AI recommendation comes from consensus: the same information about you, phrased the same way, in several places.

The typical case is a company that holds its keywords but describes itself one way on the site, another way on its Google listing, another on LinkedIn, and another in an interview from two years ago. To Google that is four pages. To a model trying to summarise who you are, it is four versions that contradict each other, so it sets you aside and takes someone whose story is consistent.

The second case is more mundane: the site delivers its content through JavaScript. We tested this on our own pages. The crawlers used by AI assistants do not execute JavaScript, so text that appears after a script starts does not exist for them. Googlebot does execute it, but in a second wave, delayed and with no guarantee.

Can I pay to have ChatGPT recommend me?

No. There is no paid placement inside the answer, and anyone selling you that is selling you something else. The ads that appear around an answer are a separate product and they do not change the content of the answer.

It is worth stating flatly, because it is the first question almost everyone asks, and because offers already exist that imply otherwise.

What has to be on the page to get quoted

Boringly concrete things. What you do, who for, where, since when, at what price or at least in what range. A model cannot quote an impression. It can quote a sentence that contains a fact.

Put the answer in the first forty words of a section, not at the end. Write headings that sound like the question a person asks, not like a tagline. Give numbers with a date and a source. A paragraph that loses its meaning when lifted out of the page will never be lifted out of the page.

And keep the same description everywhere. The same words, not inspired synonyms.

Mentions off your site carry as much weight

This is where most of it is lost. Your own site is one source, and an interested one. Confirmation comes from reviews, from a complete business listing, from profiles where the company details are identical, from articles where someone else mentions you.

It is not about volume, it is about agreement. Three places saying the same thing beat twenty saying slightly different things.

How to check whether you appear

You ask. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode and ask the questions a buyer would ask, not your own company name. “Which packaging design studio would you recommend for a coffee brand launching in the EU.” Note whether you appear, where in the list you sit, and which source gets cited.

Then repeat monthly with exactly the same questions. Without a fixed list of questions you have nothing to compare, and without comparison you do not have a measurement, you have an impression.

One trap if you go looking for advice on this: search for how to check whether you appear in ChatGPT and you get AI text detectors, an entirely different subject.

How long it takes

Months, not weeks. A new mention has to be found first, then repeated often enough to count, and the sources the assistants lean on refresh at different rates.

Anyone promising you a month either never measured it or is measuring something else.

How we think about it

We run SEO and GEO as one job, because the foundation is shared and only the phrasing differs. The part that is strictly about how AI engines understand you as an entity and attribute you correctly has its own page. If you want the mechanics engine by engine, that is in how AI engines decide which brands to recommend.

And if the question has not reached your market yet, we will tell you so, instead of selling you a fashionable word.

FAQ

What helps a UK brand get recommended by ChatGPT? Consistent facts across your site, Google Business Profile, Companies House and UK directories, plus pages that answer real questions.

Can I pay to have ChatGPT recommend my brand? No. There is no paid placement inside a ChatGPT answer, and anyone selling you that is selling you something else. Ads around the answer are a separate product and they do not change what the answer says.

How long before a brand shows up in AI answers? Usually months, not weeks. The models rely on sources that refresh at different rates, and a new mention has to be found first, then repeated often enough to count.

Does this matter for a small company? Yes, and often more. On a narrow question there is less competition, so a correct listing plus two or three consistent mentions can put you in the answer where larger brands have not bothered.

Does this replace classic SEO? No, it rests on it. A site crawlers cannot read is neither indexed nor quoted. The work overlaps heavily, and what is new is the phrasing and the outside confirmation.

How do I check whether my brand appears in AI answers? Ask the assistant directly, using the questions a real buyer would ask rather than your company name, and write down the answer. Repeat monthly with the same questions and track whether you appear and where in the list you sit.
